About Sibuyan Island Natural Park

Sibuyan Island Natural Park, located in Romblon Province in the central Philippines, covers much of Sibuyan Island, famed for its rugged terrain and dense forest cover. It is dominated by Mt. Guiting-Guiting, a jagged volcanic peak rising to 2,058 meters, considered one of the most challenging climbs in the country. The park is a biodiversity hotspot, harboring numerous endemic species of flora and fauna due to its isolation and relatively untouched ecosystems. Its rainforests are home to rare wildlife such as the Romblon tawny owl, the Sibuyan striped shrew-rat, and unique plant species like the Nepenthes sibuyanensis, a carnivorous pitcher plant. The park draws outdoor enthusiasts mainly for trekking and mountaineering, with trails ranging from accessible lowland walks to steep, technical ascents to the summit. Aside from hiking, visitors enjoy birdwatching, photography, and discovering unique limestone formations and waterfalls scattered across the island. The natural park was declared in 1996 to preserve its rich biodiversity and clean water sources vital to local communities. Despite its ruggedness and relative remoteness, Sibuyan Island Natural Park offers a rare escape into a wild tropical landscape with limited infrastructure, rewarding those willing to make the multi-step journey to this ecological gem. It is highly appealing to adventurers seeking off-the-beaten-path experiences in the Philippines’ natural heritage.
